Gas Shepherding by an Infalling Satellite

چکیده

I calculate the action of a satellite, infalling through dynamical friction, on a coplanar gaseous disk of finite radial extent. The disk tides, raised by the infalling satellite, couples the satellite and disk. Dynamical friction acting on the satellite then shrinks the radius of the coupled satellite-disk system. Thus, the gas is “shepherded” to smaller radii due to the action of dynamical friction on the satellite. In addition, gas shepherding produces a large surface density enhancement at the disk edge. If the disk edge then becomes gravitationally unstable and fragments, it may give rise to enhanced star formation. On the other hand, if the satellite is sufficiently massive and dense, the gas may be transported from ∼ 100 pc to inside of a few pc before completely fragmenting into stars. Finally, I briefly discuss various candidates for shepherds and how gas shepherding may help fuel active galaxies and central starbursts. Gravitational Heating Helps Make Massive Galaxies Red and Dead

We study the thermal formation history of four simulated galaxies that were shown in Naab et al. (2007) to reproduce a number of observed properties of elliptical galaxies. The temperature of the gas in the galaxies is steadily increasing with decreasing redshift, although much of the gas has a cooling time shorter than the Hubble time. The gas is being heated and kept hot by gravitational heat...

Do the Electrons and Ions in X-ray Clusters Share the Same Temperature?

The virialization shock around an X-ray cluster primarily heats the ions, since they carry most of the kinetic energy of the infalling gas. Subsequently, the ions share their thermal energy with the electrons through Coulomb collisions. We quantify the expected temperature difference between the electrons and ions as a function of radius and time, based on a spherical self-similar model for the...

The significant contribution of minor mergers to the cosmic star formation budget

We estimate an empirical lower limit for the fraction of cosmic star formation that is triggered by minor mergers in the local Universe. Splitting the star-formation budget by galaxy morphology, we find that early-type galaxies (ETGs) host ∼14% of the budget, while Sb/Sc galaxies host the bulk (∼53%) of the local star formation activity. Recent work indicates that star formation in nearby ETGs ...

Cladding of stellite composite on carbon steel by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW)

This paper deals with the investigation of the microstructure and hardness of steel samples cladded with satellite 6-WC composites by using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. For this purpose, steel samples were coated with unreinforced and reinforced stellite (by 20, 30 and 40 wt.% WC). The cladded samples were evaluated by metallographic studies, microhardness measurement and X-ray diff...

Cooling flows within galactic haloes: the kinematics and properties of infalling multi-phase gas

We study the formation of disks via the cooling flow of gas within galactic haloes using smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. These simulations resolve mass scales of a few thousand solar masses in the gas component for the first time. Thermal instabilities result in the formation of numerous warm clouds that are pressure confined by the hot ambient halo gas. The clouds fall slowly onto...
